SPAR recognises the importance of delivering outstanding service and has a long history of training and developing staff. We actively run international training programmes focused on developing our employees to ensure that they have the necessary skills and knowledge required for their roles.

Additionally, SPAR countries have their own unique training schemes to meet the needs of the local market. The SPAR Training Academies in Austria and South Africa were trailblazers in people development and are nationally accredited.

Online learning is another popular means of keeping our employees informed and up-to-date on a wide range of topics, and is constantly being developed to help staff in their work.

SPAR is embedded in the communities in which it operates. This community involvement extends from supporting local suppliers and providing employment, to actively engaging with local and national charities.

SPAR is an important market place for local producers, with an ever-increasing range of local and regional products available. In Africa and China, SPAR has been at the forefront of pioneering initiatives to support local farmers.

At SPAR, we are constantly doing our best to minimise our impact on the environment. Important initiatives have been adopted by SPAR Partners to improve transport efficiency and reduce fuel usage in distribution. Improved route planning has been implemented, along with the widespread introduction of telematics to improve driving efficiency.

The introduction of LED lighting and increased natural lighting in stores has contributed to reducing energy use, as has the introduction of doors on chilled cabinets and covers on refrigeration units. We also see active engagement throughout our supply chain to reduce waste and eliminate landfill.
