Switzerland: SPAR opens energy-efficient supermarket

A new 600 m² SPAR store in Liebefeld is one of Europe’s most modern stores in terms of energy efficiency. The cooling system uses a environmentally-friendly CO2 refrigerant in combination with an intelligently controlled, compact cold water production and integrated heat pump. The waste heat is reused, meaning that heating with fossil fuels is unnecessary. This reduces CO2 emissions substantially and saves about 21,000 kWh per year. Additionally, the latest LED technology is used saving even more energy.

Energy Independent Supermarket in Graz Opens

The SPAR climate protection supermarket in Graz amazes not only climate experts - it is the first supermarket in Austria which consumes only as much energy as it produces. By using modern building materials and advanced technologies such as LED lighting with daylight control and heat recovery, the energy consumption of the SPAR store has been significantly reduced. The use of renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic and a planned hydroelectric turbine in the adjacent stream, make the supermarket energy independent and thus CO2 neutral. SPAR partner WWF is delighted with the store which has already been awarded with OGNI Gold.
